Encompass Car Insurance Company Review
Encompass Car Insurance Company is a subsidiary of Allstate Insurance Company, which is part of the Allstate Insurance Corporation. This company is a member of the Encompass insurance group that offers personal insurance for autos, home, home and work, boats, motorcycles and identity fraud.
Although their website does not readily provide the location of its home base, the Hoover’s Inc. website notes that Encompass is located in Northbrook, Illinois. Once known as CNA Personal Insurance, it has become one of the largest personal insurance companies in the nation, covering more than 1.2 million policyholders in more than 40 states, Hoover’s says.
Although the Encompass website is slow to provide certain pertinent information, it is quick to note that they have 1,750 employees and a high customer satisfaction rating. The high 95.6% customer satisfaction rating came from customer’s input regarding claims on the 2009 Encompass Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty Tracking Survey.
The site is also lacking in many details readily accessed on other insurance company sites. Encompass instead, repeatedly offers links encouraging the user to find and contact an agent for more information.
Encompass Car Insurance Options
Encompass offers the typical car insurance available from most companies as well as a Universal Security Policy, or USP, for additional coverage that goes beyond the standard liability and collision coverage. The optional USP coverage comes in three package options: Special, Deluxe, and Elite, and allows you to create a blanket policy that covers your auto and other insurance needs under a single policy with a single premium. USP options for car insurance cover three main areas.
If you opt for the rental car liability option for your car insurance, your rental cars are covered if you damage the rental car and render if out of service. The rental car liability clause covers claims for loss-of-use for the vehicle.
Automobile trip interruption covers expenses you may incur if your car breaks down due to a loss that is covered by your car insurance policy. With the Elite plan and optional coverage on the Special plan, Encompass may reimburse you for your lodging, food and up to a specific limit on plane tickets that you need while your car is inoperable.
Electronic options are a USP feature that comes with the Deluxe and Elite plans and can be purchased as an option through the Special plan. This option covers computers, CD players, fax machines, car phones, and other electronic equipment that is permanently installed in your vehicle.
Standard discounts you typically find with car insurance companies also apply to Encompass, and the company offers a few additional discounts. These include senior driver rates, young driver academic discounts, and forgiveness for your first accident. The Encompass website notes your rates will be locked in for at least 12 months.
National Market Share
As a small part of a bigger corporation, Encompass Car Insurance does not corner the market on auto insurance, but its parent company Allstate Corp. certainly does. The Insurance Information Institute ranks Allstate Corp. as number two on its top 10 list of writers of private car insurance based on the direct premiums written in 2010.
Allstate enjoyed 10.2% of the market share for personal car insurance in 2010, with a total of nearly $17 million in direct premiums, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Allstate was only beaten out by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance, which has an 18.7% market share.
Encompass Car Insurance Claims to Fame
With the slogan, “Geared to go the extra mile,” Encompass Car Insurance Company has a catchy motto, but not much else that makes it stand out from the crowd. The company website begins its About page by noting Encompass “may not be a household name,” which sets the stage for relatively obscurity. Although the site boasts the company has been around for a long time, as noted earlier, finding background information on the company is not as easy as it is on many other car insurance websites.
J.D. Power and Associates Ratings for Encompass
Encompass Car Insurance Company was not good, but at least consistent, with its ratings from J.D. Power and Associates. Encompass received a rating of two out of five among the auto insurance providers listed on the J.D. Power and Associates website, the lowest ranking available. Such a low score means consumers ranked them below its competitors in the categories of billing and payment, policy offerings, the ability to contact the insurance company and pricing.
Despite its low ranking on the J.D. Power and Associates scale, the Encompass website notes branches of the company received high scores from A.M. Best for financial strength. Encompass Home and Auto Insurance Company was among those receiving at A+ from A.M. Best, an indication of superior financial strength.
