The Audi A4 Avant is the “wagon” version of the popular Audi A4. Volkswagen has manufactured the Audi A4 Avant since 2001. The Avant line includes a 2.0-liter dual-overhead cam engine with turbocharging for great performance. Although the engine is only four cylinders, most reviewers feel it offers enough power for the average driver, and the smaller engine is more fuel efficient.

The Avant comes in three trim levels: Premium, from $36,400 retail; Premium Plus, from $41,000; and Prestige, from $46,300. Premium trim level includes 17-inch alloy wheels with 245/45 all-season tires, halogen headlights, single-zone climate control, and sunroof. Premium Plus adds 18-inch alloy wheels with all-weather tires, HomeLink® remote transmitters, xenon headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, driver seat memory, heated front seats, and three-way climate control. The Prestige trim adds the Bang & Olufsen® sound system, side assist, rear acoustic parking sensors, and MMI Navigation Plus®.

Audi A4 Avant Reviews

Reviewers love the Avant’s exterior, which they characterize as “sleek.” The styling is certainly sophisticated, with clean lines and aerodynamic shaping. The Audi A4 Avant also boasts some of the best included features in the luxury wagon class. Included in the base model are standard leather upholstery, 50.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down, and MMI. Optional features are keyless startup, power liftgate, and HID headlights. Quattro all-wheel drive systems are standard on all trim models. There have been some complaints about the cramped backseat and the complex Multi Media Interface System, which relies on a single control for audio and climate functions, but in general the reviewers have been positive about the 2012 Audi A4 Avant’s interior, noting that it has more standard features and better quality materials than more expensive vehicles in its class.

Audi A4 Avant Safety Test Ratings

The 2012 Audi A4 Avant has performed well in crash testing, gaining high marks for safety. In federal crash tests, the 2012 Avant earned four stars overall, with four stars for frontal crash protection and five stars for rollover and side crash protection. While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet tested the 2012 Avant, the organization has tested and awarded a “Top Safety Pick” to the A4 sedan, which has similar safety features. Onboard safety features on the Avant include front, front-side, and side curtain airbags, the Quattro all-wheel drive system, and stability and traction control. Buyers can also opt for blind spot monitoring and rearview camera, which is not standard on any model. However, the Prestige trim does offer side assist and acoustic rear parking sensors; adding the blind spot monitor and the rearview camera will give drivers an extra layer of protection from “fender benders.”

Audi A4 Avant Awards

Power voted the A4 the “Auto Test Champion,” and as long ago as 2001, the A4, then in its infancy as a model, was awarded the “Imported Car of the Year” in Japan and the Avant was named the “Family Car of the Year” in Spain.

Audi offers a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty on the 2012 A4 Avant. Roadside assistance is also included for the first four years. Repair costs can be expensive, as for most luxury cars.
